Founded in 1664 as the second French settlement in French Guiana, Sinnamary is a modest coastal town on the Sinnamary River, between Kourou and Iracoubo, home to the Guianan Soyuz launch site. The town has both an Indonesian and a Galibi Amerindian community, each producing artwork and jewellery available to buy locally. A prison for priests and political detainees was built here in 1792, adding a darker layer to its colonial history.
