Sillamäe's most striking feature is its mid-20th-century Stalinist-era town centre, described as the most complete and intact neoclassical architectural ensemble in the surrounding region — a legacy of its years as a closed Soviet city for nuclear scientists between 1947 and 1991. The town sits on the southern shore of the Gulf of Finland at the mouth of the Sõtke River in northeastern Estonia, and its predominantly Russian-speaking population reflects that Soviet past.
