This proclaimed architectural and folklore reserve in the central Rhodope Mountains of southern Bulgaria, Shiroka Laka is considered a birthplace of Rhodope folk song, and many of the tradition's most celebrated singers and bagpipe players were born here. A music school for folk songs and instruments opened in 1972. The village sits high in the mountains along a river, with a compact central core of cafés and restaurants.
