A heritage-dense little town in Tyrol's lower Inn valley, Schwaz was Austria's second-largest city after Vienna during the Middle Ages, when silver mining drove its growth. The Inn river runs alongside, the Karwendel Mountains rise to the north, and the Tux Alps to the south, with scenic viewpoints in the surrounding terrain. The town centre holds an unusual concentration of churches for its size, alongside a strong café and restaurant scene.
