Scarborough, on Tobago's western coast, is the island's main town and economic centre, with a deepwater harbour built in 1991 and a skyline dominated by Fort King George — an 18th-century fortification named after King George III that now houses a historic and archaeological museum. The town served as Tobago's capital from 1769 until the island's unification with Trinidad, after which Port of Spain took over that role.
