High in the mountains of Friuli-Venezia Giulia, Sauris is a small Italian village that doubles as one of the region's German-speaking linguistic islands — a legacy reflected in its local name, Zahre. Sitting beside a lake and close to alpine terrain, it draws visitors in both summer and winter. The village also holds several historic churches relative to its size, and its mountain setting gives it a strong visual character.
