A little village on the western shore of Lake Atitlán in Guatemala's Sololá Department, San Marcos La Laguna has developed a dense cluster of cafés, restaurants, and wellness centres — yoga studios, meditation spaces, and massage practices — that draw visitors to what is otherwise a Kaqchikel Maya community in highland terrain. Three volcanoes rise nearby, and boat connections link the village to other lakeside communities. Its colonial-era encomienda was administered by descendants of conquistador Sancho de Barahona, among them Manuel José Arce y Fagoaga, the first president of the Federal Republic of Central America.
