Founded by Spanish colonists in 1521, San Juan is Puerto Rico's capital and one of the oldest European-established cities under United States sovereignty. The historic district of Old San Juan holds Fort San Felipe del Morro, Fort San Cristóbal, and La Fortaleza — the oldest executive mansion in continuous use in the Americas — all declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1983. The city sits on the water with a dense café and restaurant scene, and serves as Puerto Rico's principal seaport and main cultural and tourism hub.
