San Basilio de Palenque, a village in Colombia's Bolívar department near the Canal del Dique and a short drive from Cartagena de Indias, holds the distinction of being the first free African town in the Americas. UNESCO recognised its cultural space in 2005 as a Masterpiece of Oral and Intangible Heritage, encompassing social, medical, and religious practices, musical traditions, and Palenquero — the only creole language in the Americas to combine a Spanish lexical base with Bantu grammatical structures.
