Salamiyah

Syria

Salamiyah is a city in central Syria, southeast of Hama, with historic significance as the early headquarters of Abdullah al-Mahdi Billah, who founded the Fatimid Caliphate, and the birthplace of Fatimid caliph al-Qa'im bi-Amr Allah. The city remains an important centre of Ismaili Islam and is also the birthplace of influential Syrian poet Muhammad al-Maghut. Archaeological sites, including the Shmeimis Castle and a mosque known as the Seven Mihrabs, dot the area, which sits in a basin ringed by limestone hills and mountains.
