Sakai, a large city south of Osaka on Osaka Bay, is known for two things that set it apart: its ancient keyhole-shaped burial mounds, called kofun, and its cutlery. The Daisen Kofun, a fifth-century mound within the city, is the largest grave in the world by area. Once a major medieval seaport and historically associated with sword-making, Sakai today channels that blade-craft tradition into high-quality kitchen knives, with the wider region ringed by UNESCO World Heritage sites.
