Qus
Egypt
This Nile-side city in Egypt's Qena Governorate, Qus holds the ancient Al-Omari Mosque, built in the style of Cairo's Al-Azhar, alongside scattered pharaonic remains. Archaeologists believe the ground beneath the modern city conceals a substantial quantity of ancient Egyptian artefacts, possibly including embalming temples. The wider region is ringed by UNESCO World Heritage sites, and the city sits within sight of the desert mountains that flank the Nile valley.
