Mozambique
Seaport city in central Mozambique where Vasco da Gama stopped in the late 15th century and named the nearby river Rio dos Bons Sinais — "River of the Good Signs" — taking it as an omen that he was on course for India. The town later marked the endpoint of David Livingstone's west-to-east crossing of south-central Africa in 1856. Today it serves as the capital of Zambezia Province, with a working fishing port close to the Indian Ocean.
