Founded in 1483 by the Catholic Monarchs as a royal port town on the northern shore of the Bay of Cádiz, Puerto Real has a walkable historic centre — declared a protected heritage zone — laid out on a Renaissance grid plan, with public squares, broad streets, and a 16th-century church built across Gothic, Renaissance, and Baroque styles. The town sits close to the water and within reach of scenic viewpoints, with a food-and-drink scene concentrated in the centre.
