This city on the eastern bank of the Irrawaddy River in Myanmar's Bago Region, Pyay (formerly anglicised as Prome) has a walkable centre with a concentration of historic churches, cafés, and restaurants. The ancient Pyu city of Sri Ksetra lies nearby, and the surrounding district sits between the Arakan Mountains to the west and the Pegu Range to the east. The Yangon–Pyay Railway, opened on 1 May 1877, was the first railway line built in Burma.
