Romania's highest town sits in the Prahova Valley, surrounded by four mountain massifs — Postăvarul, Piatra Mare, Bucegi, and Baiului — and offers a small central core of cafés and restaurants alongside ski and snowboarding terrain. Predeal hosted cross-country skiing and snowboarding events at the 2013 European Youth Olympic Winter Festival. The town's name derives from a Slavic word for "border," reflecting its historical position as the crossing point between Wallachia and Austria-Hungary before 1918.
