First mentioned in 862, Polatsk is the oldest city in Belarus, sitting on the Dvina River in Vitebsk Oblast. Its long history has left a substantial architectural record from the era of old Rus and later periods, and the city is among the locations claimed as the geographic centre of Europe. A rail hub with connections into Russia and Latvia, it sits close to the separate city of Navapolatsk.
