Plombières-les-Bains

Vosges · France

A spa village in the Vosges whose thermal springs were first developed by the Romans, Plombières-les-Bains drew an extraordinary roll of visitors over the centuries — Montaigne, Voltaire, Napoleon Bonaparte, Joséphine de Beauharnais, Berlioz, and Napoléon III among them. The town reached peak fashion in the 19th century and retains much of its Second Empire architecture, including the Church of Saint-Amé built with Napoléon III's financial backing. Known locally as the "town of a thousand balconies," it remains an active spa destination in eastern France.
