Home to the world's first large-scale oil refinery, opened in 1856, Ploiești earned the nickname "Capital of Black Gold" and remains a working refinery city in Romania's Prahova County, north of Bucharest. Its centre holds a walkable collection of 19th-century mansions, historic churches, and a solid café and restaurant scene. The city sits at the gateway to the Prahova Valley, Romania's main alpine tourism corridor, and serves as a well-connected rail hub for onward travel to Transylvania and Moldavia.
