Home to Wat Phra Si Rattana Mahathat and its Phra Phuttha Chinnarat — one of the most revered and widely copied Buddha images in Thailand — Phitsanulok is a historic city in lower northern Thailand sitting on the Nan River, which divides the centre into two banks. Founded in the 11th century as a Khmer outpost, it served as a royal capital on several occasions and retains a walkable riverside centre with a lively food scene. The city sits roughly midway between Bangkok and Chiang Mai on the northern rail line.
