Petrolina, on the north bank of the São Francisco River in southern Pernambuco, has grown since the 1980s into a significant wine-producing area, with irrigated vineyards drawing enotourism to this semi-arid region. The city is also a major fruit exporter and the main urban centre of the São Francisco Valley, forming a cross-state conurbation with Juazeiro, Bahia, on the opposite bank. Founded in 1870, it holds the largest hotel network in the broader Sertão tourism region.
