Batik production defines Pekalongan, a port city on the northern coast of Central Java, Indonesia, where the textile tradition is varied and distinctive enough to have earned the city the nickname "Kota Batik." In December 2014, Pekalongan became the first city in Southeast Asia admitted to UNESCO's Creative Cities Network. Sitting on the Java Sea with mountains visible to the south, the city is also Central Java's most important port.
