A little Estonian hamlet on the Pirita River in Harju County, Paunküla has a history layered beneath its quiet setting: two treasure finds have been unearthed here, three archaeological monuments — including two settlement sites and a burial ground known as Surnumägi — dot the area, and the grounds of the former Paunküla manor are under heritage protection. A nearby reservoir takes its name from the village.
