A regional hub in the Sertão of Paraíba, Patos sits in the Espinharas River valley with the Borborema Plateau rising to the east and south. Officially designated the Capital of the Paraíba Sertão by state law in 2022, the city draws on a centre with a walkable café and restaurant scene and several historic churches. Its São João de Patos festival, held each June and recognised as an intangible cultural heritage of Paraíba, is the city's most distinctive annual event.
