This city in northern Rio Grande do Sul known as Brazil's National Capital of Literature and a stronghold of gaúcho culture, Passo Fundo sits on the river that gives it its name. The singer-songwriter Teixeirinha made the city famous across Brazil with his 1960 song "Gaúcho de Passo Fundo" and later starred in a film set here. The centre offers a walkable café and restaurant scene alongside a concentration of historic churches.
