Founded in the 13th century by the Totonacs, Papantla de Olarte is a town in northern Veracruz known as the origin region of natural vanilla and home to the Danza de los Voladores, performed by voladores at the downtown cathedral. The nearby El Tajín archaeological site is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Large-scale murals and sculptures by Totonac artist Teodoro Cano García fill the city, and local vanilla liquor is a regional specialty.
