Paltamo

Finland

This tiny lakeside municipality in Finland's Kainuu region, Paltamo sits on the northeastern shore of Oulujärvi and holds several historic churches for a settlement of its size. Historically, it served as the founding parish from which much of the present-day Kainuu region was carved out over the centuries. The area was once known for the large tar boats built here, which took the name "paltamos" from the village itself.
