Oranjewoud

Netherlands

Known for the presence of the House of Orange-Nassau in the 17th, 18th, and 19th centuries, Oranjewoud is a pocket-sized Frisian village in the municipality of Heerenveen whose eastern side has been a protected village conservation area since 2012. The legacy of that aristocratic history survives in the estates, woodlands, and parks that still cover much of the area, alongside Oranjewoud Palace and Museum Belvédère, a museum of modern and contemporary art. The village and Heerenveen together are sometimes called "Het Friese Haagje" — the Frisian little Hague.
