Modest ski and tramping base on the southern edge of Tongariro National Park in New Zealand's North Island, Ohakune sits close to Mount Ruapehu's active volcano and its Turoa ski fields. In summer the town draws hikers tackling the Tongariro Alpine Crossing. Self-styled New Zealand's Carrot Capital, it has a giant carrot sculpture on its main road and a café and restaurant scene that would suit a town twice its size for a village of a few thousand.
