Nurmes
Finland
This small North Karelian town sits on a ridge between Lake Nurmesjärvi and Lake Pielinen, with the Bomba Karelian Village — a tourist destination dedicated to Karelian building traditions and food culture — as its main draw. Nurmes declared itself Finland's Christmas carol city in 2005 and extended that title to Europe in 2009, with concerts and musical events filling the pre-Christmas calendar. A twice-daily train connects it to Joensuu to the south.
