Nueva Loja — also known as Lago Agrio — is Ecuador's oil capital, a town on the left bank of the Aguarico River in the northern Amazon that grew rapidly from mid-20th-century petroleum discoveries. The walkable centre has a real café and restaurant scene, and the riverside setting gives the city its defining character. It also serves as the largest urban hub in Ecuadorian Amazonia and the capital of Sucumbíos Province, making it a practical base for the surrounding region.
