Nueva Helvecia
Uruguay
Founded in 1862 by Swiss and other European settlers, Nueva Helvecia is a little Uruguayan town in Colonia Department whose Central European character — visible in the crests and architectural details on its houses — sets it apart from the surrounding South American landscape. Known nationally for its Swiss heritage, the town also holds a place in Uruguayan agricultural history: the country's first mechanical threshing machine was installed here in 1868, followed by its first steam-powered mill in 1876.
