A modest village in Latvia's Selonia region, Nereta sits on the Dienvidsusēja river close to the Lithuanian border, with two churches — Lutheran and Catholic — a secondary school named after the writer Jānis Jaunsudrabiņš, and a museum dedicated to him nearby. The village hosts an annual 3x3 Latvian heritage summer camp and is surrounded by peat bogs, with a small hydroelectric station on the river reservoir.
