Negoro-ji, the head temple of the Shingi Shingon sect of Buddhism, sits within the Katsuragi Mountains in Iwade, Wakayama Prefecture, with grounds designated as both a National Historic Site and a National Place of Scenic Beauty in 2007. Founded by the monk Kakuban, the temple complex is set against mountain scenery in a region ringed by UNESCO World Heritage sites.
