Nanxun
China
A well-preserved water town in Zhejiang province, Nanxun grew wealthy during the Ming and Qing dynasties as a centre of silk production and trade, with merchants selling the prized "Jili Silk" along an extensive canal network. That prosperity left behind an unusual blend of Eastern and Western architecture, and the canals and stone bridges of the ancient town remain largely intact. Founded in 1252, Nanxun also once held China's largest private library collection at the Jiaye Hall.
