Sitting where the Yangtze River meets the East China Sea, Nantong is a large port city in southeastern Jiangsu with a long history as a textile centre and a tradition of kite-making. One of the first Chinese cities opened to foreign investment, it has a deepwater harbour connected to inland waterways and sits across the river from Shanghai. The State Council has designated it a National Historic and Cultural City.
