One of Thailand's most ancient cities, Nakhon Si Thammarat served as the administrative centre of the south for much of its history and was once the Kingdom of Ligor. The city sits on the east coast of the Malay Peninsula, originally on the coast before silting shifted the shoreline, and retains a walkable centre with a distinct Old Town south of the modern train-station district, along with buildings and ruins of historical significance.
