On the Kwanza River in Angola's Icolo e Bengo Province, Muxima is home to a Marian shrine and a Portuguese fortress built in 1599 — both dating to an occupation that began in 1589. The town's name means "heart" in Kimbundu, and the shrine draws pilgrims to this riverside setting within sight of mountains.
