The administrative capital of Magelang Regency in Central Java, Mungkid sits roughly four kilometres from Borobudur, one of the world's great Buddhist temples and a UNESCO World Heritage site. Founded on 22 March 1984 to replace the city of Magelang as the regency seat, it functions primarily as a government and commercial centre, and lies along the provincial corridor connecting Semarang, Magelang, and Yogyakarta.
