The main draw of Phonsavan, the provincial capital of Xieng Khouang in central Laos, is its proximity to the Plain of Jars, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Built in the late 1970s to replace the old provincial capital destroyed during the Second Indochina War, the town has a compact centre with cafés and restaurants, and serves as the practical base for visiting the jar sites scattered across the surrounding plateau.
