Mpeketoni

Kenya

This small Kenyan town in Lamu County, Mpeketoni was established in the 1960s as a settlement project under Jomo Kenyatta, drawing migrants — primarily Kikuyu, Luo, and Kamba communities — from across the country. A large mango tree in the area marks where slave caravans once rested on their route to Lamu during the pre-colonial era, when the region fell under the Zanzibar Sultanate. Lake Kenyatta lies nearby, and the wider region holds a UNESCO World Heritage site.
