Sitting on the banks of the Sinú River in northern Colombia's Córdoba department, Montería is the self-styled "Pearl of the Sinú" and the country's acknowledged cattle capital, hosting an annual livestock fair each June. The city is home to the Sombrero Vueltiao, a Colombian national symbol, and to Porro folklore music. Its inland river port connects to the Caribbean Sea, and the surrounding region reflects a layered cultural heritage of Spanish colonial, Indigenous Zenú, Crypto-Jewish, and Middle Eastern influences.
