Monforte San Giorgio
Messina · Italy
This small Sicilian village just west of Messina, sitting on the water with scenic surrounds and an unusual concentration of churches for its size. Its most historically layered landmark is the remains of a castle built by Orthodox monks to resist Arab attacks, later occupied by the Normans and the royal houses of Hohenstaufen and Anjou. A handful of cafés and restaurants serve the village centre.
