A Pacific-coast beach town in southern Peru, Mollendo draws summer crowds from nearby Arequipa who come for its beaches and walkable centre with cafés and restaurants. The town served as the main port on Peru's southern coast until the mid-20th century and was a key hub in the guano trade from around 1830 to 1880; the old port is now in ruins, with commercial shipping shifted to Matarani to the north. A seasonal train still runs from Arequipa on summer weekends.
