Founded in the early 17th century as a stop on the route between São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro, Mogi das Cruzes is a city in the Alto Tietê region east of São Paulo, now one of three stops on the state's tourist train line, the Expresso Turístico CPTM. The historic centre holds a concentration of churches, and the wider municipality stretches into rural and mountain terrain along the Tietê waterway.
