This tiny town in Greater Manchester at the foothills of the South Pennines, Milnrow sits on the River Beal and retains a distinct character from neighbouring Rochdale. The Ellenroad Steam Museum preserves its cotton-spinning heritage, and surviving weavers' cottages from the era of domestic flannel production are among its listed buildings. The 18th-century caricaturist and dialect writer John Collier, known as Tim Bobbin, taught here and shaped a literary tradition that influenced later Lancashire poets.
