Metu
Ethiopia
Metu has served as a major coffee-trading hub since the 1930s, drawing merchants from outside Ethiopia to buy crops from local farmers in this highland town in the Ilubabor Zone of Oromia. Situated near the Sor River — which supplies the town's hydroelectric power — and within sight of mountains, it functions today as the administrative centre of its zone, a role it held at the regional level before Ethiopia's 1995 constitution reshaped the country's administrative boundaries.
