This pocket-sized East Flanders village in the Dender region holds a 12th-century Romanesque church dedicated to Saint Aldegund, alongside an 18th-century pillory bearing the coat of arms of the Goubau family, who were once lords of the village. During the Middle Ages, Mespelare was held by the Count of Flanders before passing through the Royen and Goubau families. Now a district of Dendermonde, it sits within a wider region ringed by UNESCO World Heritage sites.
