Mergozzo
Verbano-Cusio-Ossola · Italy
This small Piedmontese village sits directly on its own lake, with scenic viewpoints in the surrounding hills and a striking number of churches for a settlement of its size. Part of its western territory falls within the Val Grande National Park. In the autumn of 1944, Mergozzo and neighbouring Ornavasso marked the southern boundary of the partisan Republic of Ossola, giving the village a layer of wartime history alongside its natural setting.
