Maruggio

This compact Apulian town in the province of Taranto whose historic centre was largely built by the Knights of Malta, who governed the area from 1317 to 1819, Maruggio is also known for its production of Primitivo wine. One of the recognised "most beautiful villages of Italy," it sits on the Salento peninsula near the Gulf of Taranto, with a central core of cafés, restaurants, and historic churches, and a coastal fraction at Campomarino on the Ionian Sea.
